How Zuyderland Hospital built a future‑ready interoperability foundation

The challenge

Zuyderland is one of the largest healthcare providers in the Netherlands, serving a diverse population across South Limburg and facing some of the country’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

“When the regional initiative started, we could move very fast because we didn’t have to rebuild anything, so connecting to the region was easy,” Cruccas notes.

Because Firely Server was already in place, Zuyderland was able to connect to regional pilots within days, instead of weeks or months. Standardized APIs and reusable profiles significantly reduced custom development and ongoing maintenance, freeing up limited engineering capacity for higher-value innovation.

Today, Zuyderland supports tens of thousands of patients digitally across multiple care pathways. By centralizing access through interoperable platforms: 

• Patients access care digitally through a single portal

“Those patients are not ending up in the hospital, which is already a huge added value — not only for the patient, but for the hospital as well,” says Cruccas.
